WHAT IS A FOOD CO-OPERATIVE?

A Food co-op is a co-operative, meaning an organization that belongs to its members. Every member is a shareholder, has a vote and participates in the supluses that a co-operative may generate. Such a co-op is more focused on the needs of its member and less so on the profits/surpluses to be made. A co-operative’s orientation is abiding to the law as prescribed in Act 14 of 2005 and it has to obey all the stipulation as described therein.

In the second place the co-operative concentrates of the alimentation needs of its members. Within the co-operative unique plans are made to ascertain that good, healthy and wholesome food is being produced and served on the tables of the members with the best possible price tag attached. To put it in simple terms, the co-op obtains food as close as possible to the source on behalf of the members and delivers these to the member’s premises.

It therefore cuts out the middleman, assures a high quality and reduces the costs and inconvenience factor for the purchasing, processing and packaging of the food.

Food co-op’s exist all over the world and are a well-known source for obtaining food in rural as well as urban areas in the rest of the world. It is still relatively unknown in South Africa and thus the Pretoria Food co-op is a pioneer in this field.

Because the Pretoria food co-op is still relatively young, various approaches of workability are being and have been tested. This is the reason for the present mode of delivery. As the co-op grows in members and more are involved, as well having a more profound understanding of the co-operative concept, the co-op may alter these approaches to suit the needs of the members even more.

YOUR BENEFITS AS A MEMBER

As a member of the co-op you are also a shareholder. This brings you the following advantages:

  • You have a vote. Once a year the co-op call an AGM where you will have the opportunity to elect the Directorate for the co-op.
  • You may also make yourself eligible for election, as a director, if you so wish to serve your community.
  • Should the co-op make a surplus, you will participate in the dividends in accordance to your shareholding and some other factors. Thus, besides the big saving and convenience already received through the food co-op, you will have an opportunity to earn an extra income.
  • You do have an influence in the co-operative and should therefore feel very relaxed in commenting, suggesting opportunities or even criticising the co-op and communicating these with the Directorate.
